About Open Roads
About Open Roads

Open Roads School is a brand new facility offering bright and spacious classrooms with heated floors, specialized rooms for drama, art and instrumental music, a designated special education resource area, a double gym with change rooms, and a beautiful library with a wall of windows that span from floor to ceiling creating a warm and relaxing space full of natural light.

We take pride in being a technologically advanced school.  All classrooms are equipped with interactive SMARTboards and sound systems, providing each student with a ‘front row seat’.  Students in Kindergarten to grade 3 have access to iPads for reading, writing and mathematics instruction.  Chromebooks are provided to every student in grades 4 through 8 making learning interesting, challenging and engaging, while providing students with a global perspective.

As an Open Roads School student, your child will be able to experience a variety of programs to enhance their education, reaching a multitude of learning styles.

Through the EXPLORE program, the athletic and adventurous student can enjoy a variety of activities including hockey, Canada Fitness training, specialized instruction in court sports, swimming, dogsledding, trapping and snaring, canoeing, archery, quinzee building and outdoor camping during the fall, winter and summer. Explore also includes specialized instruction in chorus and instrumental music, including guitar and a variety of drums.  Students are also exposed to a multitude of art techniques including sketching, modeling, print making, painting, sculpting etc., all delivered by specialist teachers.

For the more artistic minded student, Open Roads School provides a FINE ARTS program.  Students in this program learn visual art techniques using a multitude of media, study acting and performing through drama and dance, and learn to play woodwind and brass and/or percussion instruments in an orchestral band which explores both classical and modern music.  Each year students travel to Winnipeg to explore the arts in a larger center.  The tour typically includes watching a play at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People or taking in a ballet at the Centennial Concert Hall, visiting and studying an exhibit at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and observing the symphony.  The trip also includes taking part in a variety of art, music, drama and/or dance workshops following the performances or tours.  In partnership with the Dryden Entertainment Series and community artists and performers, specialists are often brought in to enhance classroom instruction. Most recently students have received hip-hop dance instruction from Liz Gardner, acrobatic dance instruction from Motus O, Jazz dance music instruction from Decidedly Jazz Dance, music instruction from the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and a visit from a renowned Canadian musician, Susan Aglukark.  Ukulele virtuoso and Juno nominee James Hill also provided a ukulele workshop and performance with cellist Anne Davison.  Students are also involved in Coffee Houses and Open Mic Nights as well as an annual theatre production including set and costume design, stage management and performance.

For our HOCKEY enthusiasts, beginning in September 2016, Open Roads School will be offering a variety of hockey programming for students in grades 1 through 8, including First Shift and Hockey Canada Skills Academy.  Through these programs, students will learn many important skating and hockey skills while gaining the tools necessary for them to be successful in school and well into the future.

Extra-curricular activities are offered for all students at Open Roads School.  Junior and intermediate students can enjoy a variety of sports teams.  These teams compete in tournaments with neighbouring community schools.  Daily sports intramurals are offered in the gym over the lunch hour.  Junior PALS Leaders provide fun interactive games for our primary students during recess.  Various clubs are offered throughout the year.  Robotics Club, Howling Wolves Rock Band, Eco Club and Cheerleading are some favourites among the students.

Open Roads School has a very active Parent Council, called Parents 4 Kids.  This group of parents hosts a variety of activities that help make Open Roads School a fantastic place for children.  A complimentary Winter and Spring Feast, Family Halloween Dance and end of year Family Day Picnic are just a few events that they support.  In addition to the Parents 4 Kids activities, Open Roads School also hosts a variety of fun events including Talent Shows, Christmas Concerts, school dances, and monthly Family Nights, where families are invited to attend a complimentary dinner and interactive family oriented activities.

We are proud of our school, our unique programming, and most of all, our students and the accomplishments we see them making every single day.   Our doors are always open to our families and community members, and we invite you to stop by and see what Open Roads School has to offer!
